Statement
Artist statement ..... Ann Marie Whitton Since childhood I have always drawn and painted, it gave me great pleasure, it calmed me down, I 'lost myself' in the activity, sometimes it was a struggle and often exciting, but for many years I didn't paint. It wasn't until the birth of my children did I rediscover my creativity and sense of play. Now I am on a new journey with my painting. I love it. I enjoy playing with my art, I have become a child again interacting with the materials by painting using my hands as tools, and I love making a mess! I use automatic drawing to unlock my unconscious. I close my eyes and draw whatever I feel or see. I often draw inside a circle shape, these circles have healing powers, give inner peace and a sense of well being. But most of all they are magical! Expressing myself in images rather than words is important. I usually paint or draw in a spontaneous manner, completing a canvas in one session. In my images I use bold colour combinations and organic abstract forms to convey my inner feelings or emotions that are evoked by a particular time and place. The land , the sea and the sky are my main stimulus for my art making. My favourite materials are acrylics painted on any surface, and water colours on water colour paper. I love the rich and textured effects I can obtain with acrylics. where as water colours can have an opposite effect by giving a fluid use of colour. Both materials give me a sense of freedom and movement. I am influenced by many artists and art movements, I particularly love the work of Howard Hodgkin, Henry Moore, Georgia O'Keeffe, Damien Hurst, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Lucian Freud, John Turner and many more. About the Artist... Ann Marie Whitton is a qualified teacher and a self taught artist. For twenty years Ann Marie has attended many art courses on a variety of subjects such as Portrait and Life drawing, Landscape, Still life and Chinese brush painting. She has studied and taught silk screen printing and other printing techniques. During her career Ann Marie has worked mainly with special needs children, aged two and a half to nineteen. Using her art activities as a way to develop communication skills and creativity. In 1995 she opened up Dragon Art Studio at her home. Here she has organised and taught on many drawing and painting courses for adults and children. In 1998 Ann Marie decided to attend an Art Therapies Foundation Course at the University of Hertfordshire, of which has given her greater insight in to using art to expand and develop her own creativity, plus exploring the history and theory of art therapy. Since this course Ann Marie has developed a keen interest in Carl Jung and his book called 'Man and his symbols'. At home Ann Marie, not only draws and paints for herself, but encourages her children to join many art activities, ranging from simple clay models to big floor paintings. Ann Marie believes that it is important that her children are able to express themselves by developing their creative abilities. Dragon Art Studio
