Avery,Alison-Squatter Cottage, Ironbridge Gorge - Shropshire
Squatter Cottage, Ironbridge Gorge - Shropshire / Drawing / 21cm x 15cm (8.3 ins. x 5.8 ins.) / ?14.00

Description: Ironbridge Gorge in Coalbrookdale, recognised as a World Heritage Site, was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The World's first iron wheel, rails, steam locomotive and bridge were all made here. Blists Hill Open Air Museum allows the visitor to experience the life and atmosphere of a working Victorian community. The cottage is typical of the rough dwellings erected by squatters on common land. In 1861 it housed a family of nine. The pigsty reflects the rural influences which persisted in this early industrial area.

Alison Avery

Biography
Alison Avery was born in Barking, Essex and spent her childhood in Twickenham, Middlesex. She now lives in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey and is married with one son. Alison is self taught. Her pleasure in drawing and painting began as a child and has remained with her throughout her life. Her desire for perfection and detail has stayed constant, but naturally it has developed over the years, as her attention to detail has intensified. After many years of painting in oils, she turned her attention to drawing with pen and ink and now concentrates on this medium. Alison works mainly from her own photographs. She has travelled widely across the United Kingdom, from Lands End to the Shetland Islands. She has always loved walking with her family in the mountains, on the cliffs by the sea and in the country and she puts all her thoughts and feelings of these happy times into each piece of her art. Alison's mother provided her with constant encouragement and enthusiasm. Her work is dedicated to her cherished memory.
