Biography

Fourteen years ago, at the age of 72, Sonia Ordway discovered she could draw and paint. A little over 12 years ago Sonia started losing her eyesight due to an incurable disease called macular degeneration, and now Sonia can no longer see to read. With the use of magnifying glasses she has been able to continue paiting landscapes, seascapes and still life.
The paitings that Sonia is currently showing have been created in the last year and a half. The inspiration for these works come from her memories of the sights and scenes of her many years of living and traveling in Western and Eastern Europe, Central and South America, Canada, Cuba, the Middle East and the USA.
In 1945, Sonia married John Ordway a career diplomat in the Foreign Service. Their wedding took place in London, England where the couple lived for a year. The Honorable and Mrs. Ordway were then posted to the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina during the regime of Juan and Evita Peron. In 1949, the Ordways were posted to the Embassy in Tehran, Iran, where they lived for several years. In the 1950's, Sonia returned to Buenos Aires and joined the internationally known cosmetic company, Helena Rubenstein. Sonia was responsible for the company's interests in Argentina as well as the supervision of the elegant world renown, salon and spa.
While working for Helana Rubenstein, Sonia began to study Interior Design and Decorating. Several years later, she joined the design firm of the well-known interior designer, Valerian Rybar. This career move was followed by a long association with W J Sloane in New York City, where Sonia was employed as an interior designer for over 18 years. Sonia is a long-standing member of the very prestigious American Society of Interior Designers.
In the spring of 2003, Sonia was the feature of a special program on New York 1 and Time Warner television channel in New York City.
